DRM029: KASBAH ZOO

DRM029: Comes from Italian house duo KASBAH ZOO!! Get ready for a ride.

Deeply Rooted Mixtape number 29 is in the building people, and this one marks our second submission from the European nation of Italy.  This mix comes from Italian duo Kasbah Zoo - - consisting of two musicians, each with 10+ years experience in the game - - who are known as the creators of the Italian label Zoo: Technique and who have many releases on killer labels such as Act Natural, Neim, Roots and Wings, Rawthentic and Electronique Digital.  The Zoo Technique label has been around since 2009, and has a few heavy hitters on the roster including one of our very favourites, Bubba - - who was the reason I got in touch with the boys from Kasbah in the first place.

The mix is a fun one, and we are sure that most of you will also love the mix as much as we do.  However, we ask that you make sure that you have an hour and ten minutes to spare in your day, because you will not want to be inturrupted at all during this 1 hour and eight minute journey through the Kasbah Zoo!

DRM028: Stretford Dogs Club (UK)

Strtetford Cat's Club went quickly out of Business once

Stretford Dogs Club (SDC) is particularily patient man who has had to listen to some serious bullshit from me over the past few days as I showed him how little integrity I can have sometimes.  After failing day after day to put his exclusive 2-hour mix of disco-infused deep house up on the blog as our DRM028 submission, I feel like a tool.  Oh well, it seem's likely that he wontt believe a word I say anymore.

SDC Runs a highly popular podcast series under the same name.  It's popularity  - - evident once you arrive on the Soundcloud  page, as well as the fact that he is well respected as a knowledgeable house head - -  is largely due to the solid list of great producers & DJ's he has had on his page, each of which gave their time to throw down an exclusive for his website and mix series.  To exemplify just how closely people follow this guys stuff -- look at the number of plays his DRM MIX had in the few days between its' recording and now, when I finally managed to get his mix posted.  I know, right?  I hope that SDC is not as big of a liar as me, because we hope to see him play a set of two down here in Toronto this year, which he said he would gladly do - - afterall it would be a wonderful time.

Below is a soundcloud player - - Right Click & "Save As" to download the mix - - showing how much traffic I have lost by being a slow ass bastard.  Look out for an exclusive mix @ the Stretford Dogs Club by myself in March, I look forward to contributing to this wonderful series.  Thanks SDC!!

DRM027: Talal & Zoi

It has eluded us for about a year now, maybe 10 months.  But we finally got it. A hot new T&Z Mix!!

The mysterious exclusive mix of Hushlamb and Dirtybird artists Talal & Zoi was not an easy beast to catch in the dense thicket of mix requests, but once the opportunity arose - - by way of an upcoming Hushlamb Feature @ tonight's Late & Deep, we were able to snag a sizeable catch from the talented production and DJ duo.  Super stoked, better late then never right?

Below, you will find a new tune the boys have been working on, an older remix, as well as their super cool mix and a full tracklisting. Remember that all of our previous Deeply Rooted Mixtapes can be found by clicking  on this link.

A New Production By Talal & Zoi, from their Soundcloud Page:

T&Z - Didn't know his Name by Talal & Zoi

Talal & Zoi are two cousins who are no strangers to our events by now, and this is going to be the third L&D event they play for us.  That is pretty damn rare, because we like to give many of the artists we can a slot at the jam...but we just love these guys too much and previously brought them out twice, once being LATE & DEEP #1 the kickoff event which was headlined by the boys and Alicia Hush, and set the tone for a number of big events which would eventually follow.

A Favourite Track Of Ours here @ The Deep North:

CocoRosie- Noah's Ark (T & Z Remix) by Talal & Zoi

Tonight, the duo will close the night out at LATE & DEEP #9: Hushlamb Fam Showcase, alongside good friends and crew members Alicia Hush, Anatone and Zaid Edghaim.  With releases on labels such as BEEF, Dirtybird, Thoughtless Music, Rawthentic, Mothership, Bosphorous Underground and more, these two are no new kids on the block, and can often be found closing shows for international headliners in the city of Toronto, or outright headlining their own events with sick sets of greasy late night heat with their family members from the Hushlamb Camp.

Here is their exclusive DRM mix for our blog, which is now our 27th mix from worldwide artists.   If you like minimal, techno and some deep house, then this mix should provide you with the fix you need to

Late Night Robot Parties

MFR 040: Remain's "La Rixe EP" on My Favorite Robot Records. Click Image to hear this release.

With Late & Deep #6 fast approaching, I feel compelled to share a bit of music from the Toronto label that will provide us with an array of musical masterminds in just under two weeks.  My Favorite Robot (MFR) is one of the most exciting Canadian labels in the industry right now, and a quick look at some of their releases on beatport should excite anyone who calls themselves a fan of modern tech house, deep house, techno and electronica.

The imprint's vision couldn't be any more simple.  According to MFR's label page on resident advisor, these guys seek to "Ignore the norm and broaden the definition of electronic music in order to deliver it to as many music lovers as possible", something that they do well.  With an impressive roster of artists which includes the likes of Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White of Art Department, James Teej, Adultknapper, Jori Hulkonnen, Jozif, Sasse, Nitin and Pan/Tone, to name a few, it is no wonder these guys seem to be moving along like a massive musical snowball, simply getting bigger and bigger by the second.  Just watch how these guys got the kids going crazy at Piknik Electronic in Montreal last month!  What a crowd.

Get ready people because on the 21st of October, The Deep North will be hosting the Official "La Rixe" EP Release Party for MFR's newest artist Remain.  The EP is fantastic and I am super stoked to hear this guy drop some amazing tunes for the home crowd.  To make things just a little bit sweeter, the label will be providing extra heavy support for Romain Rouffiac's set with the additional firepower provided by three of the labels local artists: My Favorite Robot, Nitin and Aaron Santos (of The Kings Arms).  Now that is what I call a lineup worth lining up for.  Check out some heat from these artists, including a remix by Toronto's very own Drumatix Six and get ready for the official announcement concerning presale tickets.  Trust me, you will need them if you plan on seeing this event in person.  Get stoked!

Be sure to check out the MFR Soundcloud for further sneak peeks of Remain's new La Rixe EP and lots of other tunes and even mixes.

Note: My Favorite Robot is Jared Simms, Voytek Korab & James Teej // The Kings Arms is Aaron Santos & James Teej.

Boots Boogie - - aka Derek Brian Williamson - - is the man behind DRM005, and fortunately for us, he is back again.  This time he brings us more heat, in the form of his Hillary Banks Minimix.  This thirty-one minute mix is a good little dinger to load onto your ipod for those long commutes to work, especially when the subway is full of chatty weirdo's trying to get all up in your shit.  For more mixes by Boots, make sure you check out his House Mixes page - - lots of boot booging potential with these suckers!!

DRM 015: Driip

One more time, we are here.  Here at the mouth of the DRM machine, waiting to see what new and exclusive mix we will recieve from the belly of the beast.  I am stoked to share this next DRM mix with you guys because it comes from a young and talented DJ/producer known by two names: his formal, birth name, Brandon Sprouse, and his pseudonym "driip"which I happen to like quite a bit - - as it could mean a number of weird things, especially after delving into his dark, dirty and grimey taste in music.

Sprouse has often said that his signature sound is no-nonsense techno, the kind that keeps your head pointed downward in a dark room, freeing your mind from surrounding distractions while focusing it on the sounds that surround.  Dark, bass heavy techno music is the passion of this up and coming Toronto Native, and you can expect to hear a lot more about the design student's ascent through the techno ranks - - especially if he remains focused on his plan to move to Berlin in order to pursue a full blown career in music.

Brandon can be found posting as a contributing member of the active Toronto blog-squad ElectroTO.  Of course, that is when he is not producing sick music or embedding hot techno tracks on facebook for me to freak out over.  Now that you have heard a couple of his productions, head on down to download his wonderfully crafted Deeply Rooted Mixtape for our blog.  The tracklist can be found in the "lyrics" section of the Mp3's id3 tags.

Let 'er driiiiiiiiiiiiiip !!

More Exclusives: Sean Roman & Jeff Rhodes

Another exclusive?  You know how it is here at The Deep North, we always share the goodies we get when we can.  Our boy Sean Roman is on fire right now, developing dance floor monsters that in my opinion, are some of the baddest house heaters coming out of Canada at the moment.  Recently Sean sent me a few tracks of his, many of which had recently been signed to killer labels such as Hot Waves, , Act Natural, Assembly and My Favourite Robot.  While all the tracks were serious heaters, my very favourite was one called Quirks, which he produced with Jeff Rhodes.

SEAN ROMAN & JEFF RHODES - QUIRKS .......... Download below.

While the -- suprisingly -- unsigned song is very simple, the vocal loop and the bassline werre destined to be together, combining to help create an infectiously catchy track that has me shaking without every day unless I get my fix - - a quirky dose on a phat set of speakers.

Sean told me at Late & Deep III this past weekend that I could put it up on the blog as an exclusive to share with the readership - - so here I am.  While I am stoked and honoured to share it with the world via the Deep North, I am only going to share the 128kbps version.  Why?  Simply because I think that Sean should hold out until someone realizes that this track is a wicked party jam that needs to be released.  In the meantime, here is the 128kbps version to get y'all excited.  Someone pick this one up please.

You can catch Sean Roman alongside DR.DVS, Pavel Elkin and myself Dick Diamonds, this Friday night at Augusta House for Nevernight - - a FREE jam I am putting together for fun.  It's always a good time seeing sean rip it up, so reach out if you want to hear some Deep House and Techno treats from this guy.  Check out the details for this event on Resident Advisor.

EXCLUSIVE TRACK: INSOMNIA by 3.A.M.

Last week I got an email from my good friend Terror Tone, head honcho over at bass-loving Stacked Records, which contained a new track by 3.A.M., a hometown trio made up of Paul Rusu, AJ Healy and Feddy Haze.  Tone told me that the style of house did not quite fit the bill for but said that the song should be heard by me because the three local chaps were "hungry" and hustling their material - - something I like to see.  I am a huge believer that only artists themselves can get the ball rolling by getting heads turning ealry, an absolutely crucial step in making something for yourself within the music industry in my opinion.  You have got to work for yourself, and let others see that you are worth investment.

While the track falls into the progressive house category - - which doesn't tickle my fancyoften - - there is a destinctive tech house feel to it, which kept me engaged and held me until the end of the track.  While I would argue that this tune doesn't really bring anything overly fresh to the table, it definitly is something some of our readers would enjoy, especially because the track is available for free download at full 320kbps quality.  I will note however, that I was really into the funky drum loop that shows itself from time to time on this one.

Check the tune, and leave some constructive feedback for the boys of 3.A.M. before you check out their soundcloud and  facebook pages.

DRM 012: Neoteric

Since our internet situation has been less than optimal (non-existant) until now, we have been having some trouble with our day to day transactions, one of which has been getting our good old pal Neoteric's Deeply Rooted Mixtape up on the blog so that we could all enjoy this delicious bag of candied tunage together.

Neoteric, who is originally from Canada's West coast, moved out to Europe in order to kick his music career into high gear.  The move has put Neoteric amongst some of the worlds finest electronic producers and our boy is constantly on that hustle and grind, day in and day out -- evidenced by some of the projects he has been working on.

In mid July Neo put out a gnarly followup to his electro house compilation, Turned On Volume 1, through Discobelle.  While the first volume in the compilation series was decidedly electro house, the followup has moved a bit more towards the techier side of house music, a flavourful mix of sweet electronica which we are loving over here at the Deep North.

Take small bite out of this remix of "How Deep Is Your Love" by Neoteric & Wax Motif -- a savory house biscuit remix -- and then tell us you don't want to devour the whole thing.  I bet you can't.  Download this beautiful bit from discobelle or XLR8TR for free.

The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love (Neoteric & Wax Motif Remix) >>> [Free Download]

Earlier in the year Neoteric & Wax Motif came together with Southern Fried to put forth the Go Deep EP, which includes remixes of the club banger by Supabeatz, KeithMaxxi Soundsystem as well as local Toronto producer Gingy.  I really like the original mix, but I think Maxxi's version gives it a good run for it's money in my opinion, followed by the version put together by our fellow Torontonian Gingy.

Neoteric & Wax Motif - Go Deep (Maxxi's 12" Deep Mix)  >>> [BUY]

Neoteric & Wax Motif - Go Deep (Gingy Remix) >>> [BUY]

As you can see, this guy likes to put in work.  It was no suprise to me that Neo has a very hard time finding a moment to breath in between putting together his White Light and unlisted mixes, doing radio shows for Scion, working as an A&R for Dubsided Records and touring the European continent to bang out shows for big crowds.  After being told that a mix would be difficult to get from him a couple of times, I had pretty much given up - - until one day a few months ago Neo hit me up saying that he had not forgotten us, and that he would have a Deep House mix put together exclusively for the blog.

So here it is folks, a Deep & Delicious mix by my man Neoteric straight out of Berlin, a place which undoubtedly influenced his selections and desire to focus a bit more on the deeper side of house, a side which i wish was as popular here in Canada as it is on the European continent.  Now, let's dig into this hearty melange of deep, dirty tracks.

DRM 010: BUBBA

Deeply Rooted Mixtape number ten.  Its hard to believe that four months have quickly passed us and that we are already on our tenth exclusive mix in our Deeply Rooted series.  The response to the mix series has been overwhelming, with major talents such as Tomas Jirku, Mr. Ho and Barletta, among others, taking time to carefully craft us exclusive works to share with our beloved readers.  We thank everyone for their contruibutions and are happy to announce that the tenth mix is just as special.

Our tenth mix comes from Jonny Smyth, aka Bubba, a man with magical talent in music and who, although not as widely recognized as some of his more mainstream counterparts, has released music with some of the most respected  names in the industry.  Hailing from Belfast, Ireland, Bubba is a man with serious accomplishments in the house music game.  With his friend Mark Scoper, Bubba released tracks on Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter's label Classic and Paul Woolford's project Hip Therapy.  Bubba also has worked with Jet Project on a team project called Bubba & T-Bone, with releases on labels such as Elevation, Mode Music and Tom Budden's Alive Imprint.  As a solo artist, Bubba has been making major moves as well, with amazing releases on respected labels such as Klasse Recordings, Extended Play, Assymetric and Logical.  The future looks friendly for this hard working house head who loves big bass and the odd wonk and skronk - - we hope to see our good friend out here in Toronto in the coming year or so, and we would love it if you could too.

We are honoured to present to you Bubba's Bass Huggin' Mix, the tenth in our Deeply Rooted Mixtape series.  This one-hour long mix is packed with wicked tunes from artists such as Manik, Tom Demac, Chirs Carrier, Kink & Neville Watson, dOP and Maceo Plex.  Get your dancing shoes on and prepare for some serious action kids - - Bubba is here, and he is not fucking around.
