Metronov (versus) Pearsonette

Mario Basanov & Ewan Pearson take on Metronomy.

House monster Mario Basanov does a nice job on this remix of Metronomy's tune Corinne, which is one of my absolute favourite non-electronic tunes period (the original that is).  While it doesn't beat the original, it definitely beats most shit out there.  I have included both versions below.  Good one Mario!

The Original. >>> [BUY IT]

Ewan Pearson also remixed one of the bands great songs Everything Goes My Way, and in this case I also think the remix does not best the original mix.  Both are worth your time though, and I must applaud Metronomy for being one of the catchiest bands going right now.  The English Riviera was such a fantastic album.

Releasing Romans

Back Arching Music. Sean Roman baby.

Sean Roman does not fuck around.  Clearly.  He releases so much shit (real good shit) that I can't even bear to speak of the production monster any further - - I wan't to lose my mind.  Anyways, this one is definitely one of my favourite releases by our crew member - - a remix of TBoy's tune "As U" next to our upcoming release together  - -  RW004 - - of course.  More info on that development shortly.  Sean Roman is pretty short too, if anyone was wondering.

Weirdo Videos: XOSAR

XOSAR must be a total babe, because her music says so. Hot.

This video is getting real weird  with it, but the song is simply amazing - - off the debut release of cosmic mystic XOSAR - - and has a gnarly bassline, dreamy vocal samples and is exceptionally fresh.  Loving this shit, for real.  Check out more of her Detroit techno and cosmic house fusions through Rush Hour Records of the Netherlands website here.  This girl murders shit, and I am not even playing around.  Check out her newest EP release on Rush Hour, named GhostHaus, which has the sickest album artwork and features two remixes by her friend Legowelt - - that guy with amazingly weird music and ghetto website ever.  Big music.  Big websites.

Melt 'em Down

Darkness Scares Most Men, But Aaron Cunningham Is Drawn To The Gloom & Doom Of Dark Beats

A friend of mine previously known as "Story Of Isaac" now known primarily for his new project "Crim3s" (avec supermodel/vocalist Sadie) cranks out tunes that sound like someone smashing cases of bottled nostagia in a Copenhagen cathedral.

Recently we were sent this remix done by Toronto's own techno machine Aaron Cunningham, whom most previously knew as "Drumatix Six".   Aaron says he has shifted his focus these days to the poorly named genre "witch house", because he simply is having too much fun making these kinds of beats.  This is his remix of genre-pioneer "Crim3s" debut "Holes"  under his new  moniker "ฯŸ†NฯŸ".

While some people throw this tune into the infamous "Witch House" genre... I say forget it. A tune is a tune.  Get twisted.

Tomas Jirku: Toronto Appearance

Wilderness lover Tomas Jirku makes some serious techno, and will be showing us the goods alongside Deepchild.

Our friend Tomas Jirku of Vancouver, whom we have featured on the blog a few times before - - including his exclusive DRM007 Mix for us - - has told me that he will be in town in early February to visit his family who are still living here in the area.

Tomas, who has been creating great techno treats since the nineties, wanted to come check out Late & Deep #10 while he was in town to check out the Deepchild performance and meet us in person.  We told him that that would be more than fine, and that it would actually be better if he came and played the event with us as it would be fun as hell - - if he were up for it.  He said that he was not only up for it, but was stoked to do so.  Check out this sneak peak of an upcoming release by Tomas, on the Leporelo imprint out of Slovakia.

So there you have it.  We are super excited to announce that our man will be gracing us with his presence and playing a set during our party series.  We cannot wait to see this guy play, but given that he has rocked the Mutek Stage in Quebec, along with various other great events - - we have no doubt that he will continue to blow our minds.  In fact, acording to Anatone of Hushlamb, he played one of the best sets at Mutek so we can't wait for this one - - two huge headliners, at one great party.  Incredible!

GET INTO IT.

For more information on LATE & DEEP #10, check out the Resident Advisor event page.  Facebook event will be up as soon as the new poster is done.  Buy some of Tomas' numerous releases over on Beatport.

DRM025: Dirty Dale

DJ Dirty Dale can move crowds like few others can, a pillar in Toronto's house music community.

Twenty-five.  No, I am not talking about my age, or the number of times I have woken up in a ditch without pants on.  Not this time.  Rather, it refers to our Deeply Rooted Mixtape series, and the current volume that is being released here before your eyes today, December 8th, 2012.

Twenty-five exclusively mixed sets in nine short months.  Awesome.  To make that even sweeter, the twenty fifth mix comes from Dale Arsenault, simply, but aptly known as Dirty Dale in Toronto's house music scene.  Originally, Dale was known as a dancer, a lover of music who could move his damn feet, arms and body like a mother fucking boss, leaving jaws on the floor and bystanders wanting more.  To exemplify this point, check out this clip of Dale smashing the dance in Montreal circa 2008.  Yes, he can still dance better than all of us.

DIRTY DALE MERKING THE SHIT OUT OF THE COMPETITION.  UNREAL.

I never knew Dale as a dancer, only as a DJ.  The first time I saw him spin was at some rave cave on Queen West, in one of the units above the infamous W Afterhours, aka 721.  Picture it.  I walk into the party, which has barely begun, and crack a cold one.  The DJ is a smaller man, unique, yet filled with a demonic energy waiting to be unleashed - - and it was - - before the swelling crowd that steadily pumped  into the space.  Forward ten minutes, and the beads of sweat on this DJ's brow had swelled to the point that they were rolling down his face, and thats when it came.  Like an eighteen wheeler with an oversized load, the drop was absolutely massive, and the crowd literally went fucking apeshit - - and the whole room shook like we were at the epicenter of some fucking world disaster.  Almost instantly, the DJ with little beads of sweat and no name was drenched from head to toe, kids hanging from the ceiling and the mirrored interior of the rave cave (dance studio) were fogged up like we were all in there having a group shower.  I found out from one of the panting partygoers that the DJ's name was Dirty Dale.  The guy was amazing.   So amazing that the DJ after him played  for about ten minutes, and the party was over.  No one could stand hearing an "OK" set after watcing an Atomic Dance Bomb go off before their eyes.

For me, Dirty Dale is exactly what a REAL DJ is.  Someone who is absolutely passionate about music, their craft and always has the dancefloor in mind - - not just the newest tunes haphazardly throwin into a "set".  I am not a DJ.  Dirty Dale is a proper fucking DJ, and I am not afraid to say that he is the best male DJ in this city, hands down.  While he does do some producing, he is not known for that.  He is known as a selector who knows his shit, who probably even knows your shit more then you do, and who has developed a solid following of supporters who want to see him unleash that unbelievable energy that motivates dancers on any dancefloor, anytime, anywhere.  He has incredible draw for someone who -- until recently -- was "just a DJ".

A Recent Remix of "Quick" by Jill Scott  >> Click to Download from Dirty Dale's Soundcloud

Since I first saw him spin about two years ago, I have seen this Dirt Hurricane absolutely destroy dancefloors across our city at least a dozen times or more.  Most of the time Dale is more excited than the crowd is, riding a wave of emotional energy like a general in battle, commanding the respect of those who follow him from venue to venue, battle to battle, dancefloor to dancefloor. Seven times out of ten, Dale will simply steal the show from the international headliners he is contracted to open or close for - - anyone remember Gramaphonedzie's set at the Great Hall a couple of months ago?  Anyone?

So here it is, DRM025 by Dirty Dale.  It is with great pleasure that the boys and I at The Deep North present  this wonderful exclusive mix to all of our readers and the hundreds of Dirty Dale fans out there - - we are honoured.

Dirty Dale is the best in the game.  Thanks for being such an inspiration.  You are one of the reasons we do what we do.

Free Mastered Exclusive 320 From Thoughtless!

A Free Exclusive Remix directly from the mastering labs at Thoughtless Music. GNARLY! Exciting news tonight people, as we are happy to announce a brand new exclusive offer from our friends over at Thoughtless Music.  The label wants to share some important information regarding their latest release, which we recently wrote about two days ago.

Deepchild - The Suffering Ones (Original Mix)

As most of you know from - - hopefully - - reading the blog regularly, Thoughtless released a sick package exclusively on Beatport consisting of 8 remixes of Deepchild's tune "The Suffering Ones", which included remixes by two Deep North resident artists: Phantom Ambulance and Sean Roman.  You all should know - - and if not, will be interested to note - - that our resident contributor and long time co-founder Max the Fax is 1/2 of the production duo Phantom Ambulance as well.  Below are some interesting details which we touched on before regarding the release, in a somewhat expanded form.  Please take a moment to read the following as we think it is important and very relevant to those interested in the label, it's artists, and social causes.

THOUGHTLESS MUSIC SUPPORTS THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT WITH NEW RELEASE

"Record label set to donate first 99 sales of Deepchild's "The Suffering Remixed" to #OccupyToronto, and 1% of sales after that...

Toronto label Thoughtless Music has just released a remix pack for the smash single by Deepchild, “The Suffering Ones.” Keeping with the spirit of this song - which takes “Why are we the ones who suffer?” as its rallying refrain - we have decided to donate the label’s proceeds from the first 99 sales of the remix pack to the Occupy Movement; specifically, to our hometown chapter: Occupy Toronto. After the first 99 sales, Thoughtless will continue to donate 1% of all sales of the remix pack to #Occupy.

The Occupy Movement is currently facing eviction and oppression throughout North America. The movement is still finding its voice and direction. Here at Thoughtless we support this process and view the process as a fundamental right. Rather than find fault with the movement, we would like to see it grow and mature into an influential force for those with no voice and limited agency. We feel the Occupy mentality is vital to maintain in order to affect positive change within our world. Some have chosen to condemn the movement for its lack of organization and leaders; here at Thoughtless we applaud the inclusive spirit and horizontal power structure the Occupy Movement represents. We prefer to find ways to support this unprecedented movement rather than criticize or tear it down.

The remix pack for “The Suffering Ones” includes fresh interpretations of the Deepchild track from Tim Xavier, [a]pendics shuffle, XI, Noah Pred, Arthur Oskan, Gingy & Bordello, Sean Roman, and Phantom Ambulance. Purchase the entire remix pack on Beatport.com at a special bundle price and support independent music, thought and culture."

Click here to check out the release.  We think it is amazing that a music label which already faces a tough market every day is still in tune with social causes that are real and happening in our own city - - and trying to help make a change.  To learn more about the Occupy Movement and how Thoughtless is involved, check out: http://thoughtlessmusic.com · http://occupytoronto.org

Thoughtless Music artist and Deep North co-founder Max the Fax also did an official remix of the Deepchild tune, and it is wicked!  In order to wet your whistle and stimulate peoples interest in the cause the label has decided to give it away for FREE to the world, exclusively through The Deep North Blog.  Wickkkkkkked!

Right click the sponsored link below, and download the track for free from the Thoughtless website by choosing "Save Linked Content As....".

Shiver Me Tonnes Of Timbers

Picture: Paula RosaYes, Yes, it is "old news".  Old news or not, this recent release by Waifs and Strays is Hot.  Hot Creations that is.  I first heard Body Shiver on the Fabric 59 compilation, and was just blown away by how good the bassline was, making this relatively simple tune so right, in so many ways.  Well, I just copped the EP and while the original mix is fire, the remix by Hot Creations' boss duo Hot Natured (Lee Foss & Jamie Jones) is a n undeniable addiction waiting to happen. - - meaning that with a few listens it devours your interest completely, leaving you thinking only of the insanely catchy tune.  Nothing else matters to me right now, except maybe this remix.

But, before you indulge, we would like to shout out the Leftroom imprint which initially rele

ased a number of tracks by the Waifs and Strays, and which has been killing it as of late - - we love the Kitchens & Bedrooms track by Alexis Raphael.  Definitely a label to watch over the coming months, I predict many more hot releases from the left camp which seems to be alternating releases with the boys over at Hot Creations.  Coincidence?  Who cares!

The The .. Jirku .. Ruoho .. Tune Up!

Our friend from the west coast of Canada, Tomas Jirku made this sweet rendition of The The's wicked tune called The Giant.  I grabbed this tune off Tomas' website Rivers of Recordings.  Catch yourself some other techno trophy trouts on his website, the bounty is plentiful.  Snag!

Tomas made us an exclusive Deeply Rooted Mixtape a few months back, and I suggest you check this bad daddy out.

And the 1980's original...

The The - Giant (Original) >>> [BUY IT]

In September, Tomas teamed up with 2006 BBC Radio-1 Remix champion and de'fchild recordings' boss Ruoho Ruotsi and released a delightful experimental dub/techno split EP which included an original track from each artist.  Each of the originals was then remixed by the non producing artist for a true 4-track split EP.  Great work as usual here, loving this deeper collaboration between the two fantastic artists.  Clearcut by Jirku is phenomenal shit. You can buy it on any major digital music retailer.

NOTE: Looking closely you will see that Jirku's remix of Ruoho's tune is downloadable for free!  Simply  click HERE for free Download.
